Tasty Tofu Wontons!

wonton header

This is a quick recipe I wanted to share. I will not go into too much detail, as I'm tired and in serious need of a nap or as we say here in the hollow 'siest'. I can quickly say though that this treat is fun albeit involved to prepare along with being absolutely delicious. The recipe is also vegan, hence there is no cholesterol/trans fats. And this treat is low in saturated fat despite being fried.

Tofu Stuffed Wonton
7 oz. Firm Organic Tofu (drained & pressed w/ paper towels)*
1 Tbsp. Light Soy Sauce
1/2 Tsp. Toasted Sesame Oil
1/2-1 Tsp. Sriracha Sauce
1/2 Tsp. Fish Sauce (optional)
1 Tbsp. Scallion (minced)
1 Tsp. Dried Minced Onion
1/2 Tsp. Cumin Powder
1/4 Tsp. Turmeric
Pinch or Two Salt
1-48 Count package of Twin Marquis Vegan Wontons or
your preferred wonton thawed.

*If you are new to tofu, it needs to be pressed with absorbent paper towels to remove some of the excess liquid.

In a bowl, break down the pressed tofu into a meal like texture. Then add the remaining 9 ingredients except the wontons and stir to properly mix. Place in the fridge.

Make a vegan egg by mixing 1 Tbsp. of cornstarch with 2 Tbsp. water. Use a brush to wet the edges of the wontons with the vegan egg mix, place about 1-1 1/2 Tsp. of tofu in the center of each wonton. Fold into a triangle ensuring that the edges are sealed (also avoid air pockets). Then take one wet corner and fold it over the other to create desired shape. Again ensure the corners are sealed against each other.

See how they're folded, Dearies?

Pan sear the wontons in about 1-2 tbsp. oil at medium heat for about 1 min on each side. Note-if the oil is too hot, the wontons will burn and, if it is too low, they will be greasy.

Place hot fried wontons on a paper towel and salt. I serve this with low sodium soy sauce mixed with sriracha and a few drops of toasted sesame oil and it is wicked awesome (smile)...

  1. as i'm not much of a meat fan i love these tofu stuffed wontons! i can never find wontons in restaurants that are meat free unless i go to a vegetarian restaurant and even then they may not have wontons. the regular wontons are always filled with pork or even when they say they are shrimp only there's always a trace of pork in them so i've totally stayed away from ordering wontons in restaurants.

your recipe sounds delicious and healthy Stella! never thought of using just tofu in wontons...duh. what an obvious, but genius idea. don't know why i never thought of that. thank you for sharing your always wonderful recipes with us Stella! beautiful presentation yet again.

  2. This looks fantastic! I remember the first time I made dumplings but I had to use wonton wrappers because I couldn't find round wrappers. I could have used the instructions on how to fold them 'cause they ended up being, well, not nearly as attractive as yours. ;)

I wanted to thank you for the advice on my herbs, it'll really help. I was aware that basil was a mint but I didn't really think about how it might overtake the pot. Would pruning it often keep it under control, or would it still interfere with the oregano?
And I thought the garlic chives would be a nice touch. I've never had them before but I figure if I need a garlicky-onion touch in a dish I can just go out to the pot and get some. :) I haven't read about companion planting but I will google it right after I post this!
Also, how long does it take to compost? I never had reason to compost before now because we have no garden to speak of, so I'm not familiar with how it's done.

Thanks again! And sorry about all the questions haha. :) <3

  3. I love that way of folding, Stella. I made a squash pocket that way once...I saw Giada make them on TV.

The flavors in your wontons are wonderful. I might actually like tofu this way! :)

I did it last week, when my father came visit me... It was a sucess! And the Sweet Potato Gratin, yes, you can do! It's very easy to do and delicious of to eat.
And, about your portuguese, I understand very well. So soon you come be a Brazilian citizen! :) Just kidding :)
I need to improve my English.. One day I'll get there! :)
By the way, yours wontons are very beatiful and sound very good.

    Kisses,

  7. I made tofu nuggets one time for my girls they were suppose to taste like chicken nuggets, something went horribly, horribly wrong...no one ate them and my little one was so angry with me..she was "famished" I think this would be a better approach to tofu, great recipe

  8. This looks ridiculously good! I always have bad luck with tofu but I'm not giving up! I like that the tofu is crumbled in this recipe. I like to make tofu scramble with curry sometimes and I can get that to turn out so I think I can make this work. ;) Yum!

  12. ummm. You made a variation of this for me before, didn't you? Looks perfect - especially with a salty broth soup. And that drinks (below it) would go nicely too. May try this on the weekend. Love.

  22. We made vegetarian wontons using tofu before too! Sometimes, we add a little spinach to mashed tofu. I like that you pan-fried the wonton - it is surely more fragrant :D

  25. Hi Stella, did you have a nice siest? i hope you did :) I think i slept poorly again last night. But no strangling bed sheets, which is nice. I hate waking up in panic.
Great wonton recipe! Love wontons. I don't know if you do this, but when we have left over fried wontons, we put them in broth the next day. I know it isn't for everyone, but it is yummy. Will have to try with tofu :) xoxo

  31. Wonderful take on wontons Stella! You are giving me cravings! Funny how my post this week also involved deep frying and beancurd! The thing is that deep fried doesn't necessarily mean oily - if enough oil is used at the right temperature, it really isn't greasy at all!

  32. Stella, this looks stellar! Sorry, I couldn't resist. I'm sure that's the first time you've heard that...

I love the idea of tofu in wontons. Thanks for showing us how to do it!

Pretty much anything with a wonton wrapper will taste good. And add to that with a little seasonings on the tofu, you are there in the sinful heavens. Hahahaha.

I can munch a big bowl full of those goodies. Yummy yummy!
