El Queso De Marly

queso de marly

This is Marly's cheese, Dearies!

If you don't know Marly, then you really need to visit her. She is a super interesting and, I must say, thoughtful lady that also happens to be a blogger. Her blog is about names, Marly's love of names, and all of the mystical things that a name can be, mean, and even create for us in our lives.

In addition to this charming preoccupation with names, Marly is also a vegan. So sometimes she shares some vegan deliciousness on her blog. This cheese is one of those things, and I must say it is quite rich and delightful. It also smears well on chips, carrots, apples, and celery without guilt, which I really like a lot. Cauldron Boy also liked it and kept swooning and breathing heavily while eating and grumbled a bit to himself about 'good hummus'. I don't know that Marly would appreciate this 'good hummus' comment or maybe I should say name. For those of you that don't like the idea of vegan cheese though, this could be considered somewhere in the realm of 'good hummus'. Kind of....

Marly's recipe is here. The only thing I did differently was to add a tsp. of paprika for color and only 1/2 Tbsp. Agave (my cashews were sweet enough). Next time, I'm going to throw a chipotle pepper and maybe some smoked paprika onto the scene to see how that is.

Thanks for a delicious and healthful snack, Marly!

*Ooh, and this recipe contains nutritional yeast, Dearies. I don't know if you all are familiar with it, but, as the name describes, it is very nutritious. Especially in the realm of B-Vitamins, which is very helpful to vegans!

  1. Hey Stella,
When I saw your picture I thought it was hummus. As I read on I was pleased to find that this was like a nutritious version of hummus. I love garlic but for some reason I find hummus too garlicy for me...yes I know I'm wierd. This is such a cool idea to use cashew nuts. Those suckers are so addicting. I'm actually allergic to nuts but do not have the will power to say no to cashew nuts. Thank you for sharing this recipe with us. I think your idea of throwing in a chipotle pepper will add a nice kick to this wonderful dip. Have a great day Stella!

  2. Thanks for the link, Stella. I could easily eat a good hummus straight from a spoon. This sounds savory and perfect for snacking on...with some vegetables.

  4. Oh, you made Marly's cheese! I saw this on her blog and I'm so curious about it. Now that I've read about it for the second time, I really want to try it! However, my lack of a food processor might be a slight issue...

  5. Oh Stella, I'm so glad to see you liked this recipe. I love the idea of adding some spice to it! I agree with Lequan that regular hummus can be too garlicky for me sometimes. I can eat it in small quantities, but more than that is too much. And I never thought of this recipe as a replacement for hummus, but I'm going to try that too. But now I'm out of cashews! This is a good excuse for a trip to the health food store. I love how you can share something and someone makes it even better.

  8. I just adore hummus, and wouldn't you know it, I just bought a big bag of raw cashews. Ergo, I am going to try this fab recipe. Just as long as I can find 'nutritional yeast' (as opposed to the un-nutritional kind!)

  9. I've been curious about nutritional yeast as I've seen it in the health food store's bulk bin. This looks like a terrific dip to have with fruits and veggies.

  17. When I look at those delicious recipes, it makes me want to become vegan. I love yeast, I put it all over the place, so nutritious! Thanks Stella for reminding us that vegan is definitely a great way to live!

  18. Stella, the only way you can make me come to the vegan side is if you cook your wonderful meals for me day in and day out. I tried vegan for a day, thought whole foods would be enough, but I ended up craving red meat by hour six.

  21. I have to admit...when I read yeast in a sentence...I kind of cringe. Now, you have nutritional in front of it. OK...you got my attention. I'll have to look into to it. However, nothing stops me from enjoying this yummy dip.
BTW...back to the Sweet Sorghum flour saga...I forgot to mention how well it works with thin crepes. I'll hopefully be doing a post on it soon.
    Flavourful wishes, Claudia
